The Unique Charm of Hinsdale
Hinsdale incorporated on 1 April 1873 and holds about 17,395 people across 4.66 square miles, with an unusual amount of protected fabric for that footprint. The Downtown Hinsdale Historic District covers the commercial core, and the Robbins Park district is bounded by Garfield Street, County Line Road, Hinsdale Avenue and 9th Street. Individually listed houses include the Bassett House on East Sixth, the Childs House on South Garfield, the Peabody House on East Third and the Whitney House on East First. R. Harold Zook's own home and studio was moved to Katherine Legge Memorial Park in 2005, 52 acres around a 1927 lodge. Three Metra BNSF stations serve the village: Highlands, Hinsdale and West Hinsdale.

Permanent roofline lighting in Hinsdale
Hinsdale is where we are most careful about permanent lighting. A Zook roofline curves in ways a straight track does not, and with two historic districts, a track screwed into original trim is often the wrong answer. On newer homes and simpler rooflines it works well: fitted under the eave, close to invisible by day, warm white most nights and color for holidays from your phone. Permanent systems start around $3,000 for a typical roofline. Zook detail, and why it cannot be run straight
R. Harold Zook worked extensively in Hinsdale, and his houses are the clearest example of a roofline that punishes a standard install: steep swooping gables, deep eyebrow curves over dormers, and rolled edges meant to imitate thatch. A prefabricated length pulled straight across a curve like that reads as a chord across an arc, which looks worse than no lighting at all. Those roofs get measured in short segments and clipped to follow the curve, which takes longer and is the only way the result looks intentional.

Seasonal lighting for an average house starts at $799 and up, depending on the complexity, height and access of the job. Hinsdale runs above it more often than not. The historic districts hold houses whose ornament is the point, and a Victorian or a Zook roofline can carry close to twice the linear footage of a modern house of the same square footage.
