The Unique Charm of Barrington
Barrington is one of the few villages we light that sits in two counties and four townships at once: Cook and Lake, across Barrington, Palatine, Cuba and Ela. That patchwork shows up in the housing stock. Around East Main Street, Park Avenue and Hough Street you get the late 19th century forms the village protects through its Historic Preservation Overlay District, Victorian, Victorian Gothic and Queen Anne, with steep gables, turrets, wraparound porches and cut trim that no straight run of C9 bulbs will ever follow. Push out from the Catlow Theater and Ice House Mall and the lots widen into mature oak and long setbacks. Residential Holiday Lighting
A Queen Anne turret near Langendorf Park and a 1970s colonial out past Citizens Park are two different installs. On the older homes we cut and fit every strand to the individual facet of the roofline and use clips sized to the existing trim, so nothing is screwed, nailed or stapled into original woodwork. Historic trim, and how we attach to it
The Historic Preservation Overlay District the village adopted in 2001 is the reason downtown Barrington still looks like Barrington, and it is also why we treat these homes differently. Original bargeboard, dentil trim and porch millwork on a house that has stood since the 1870s does not get a fastener driven into it. We hang from gutter lines and shingle edges with removable clips, we measure each gable face separately rather than running one length and hoping, and we bring the old wiring runs down inconspicuous corners instead of across a painted facade.
