The Unique Charm of St. Charles
St. Charles was founded in 1834 as Charleston, incorporated under its present name on 9 February 1839 and reincorporated in 1874. About 33,081 people live here now, on both sides of the Fox River, which runs straight through the middle of downtown rather than around it. That river is the organising fact of the town: the Municipal Center sits beside it, Pottawatomie Park is the largest park in the city and fronts it, and the Hotel Baker, opened in 1928, still stands on its bank as the landmark everything else is described in relation to. The Arcada Theatre anchors the downtown blocks. Routes 64, 38, 25 and 31 carry traffic through, along with Randall Road and Kirk Road, and there is no Metra station.
