The Unique Charm of Kenilworth
Kenilworth is the smallest village we light, 0.61 square miles and about 2,514 residents, and the most deliberately designed. Joseph Sears bought 223.6 acres in 1889 for $150,300 and laid the village out on a set of rules that still govern how it looks: large lots, high standards of construction, tree lined roadways, generous park land, and no alleys. It incorporated in February 1896 once it reached 300 residents. Franklin Burnham designed both the railroad station and Kenilworth Union Church. Frank Lloyd Wright built the Hiram Baldwin House here in 1905, and George Washington Maher's work belongs to the same Prairie School inheritance. The Metra Union Pacific North station sits in the middle of it.
