The Unique Charm of La Grange
La Grange incorporated in June 1879 and holds about 16,321 people in 2.53 square miles, roughly 13 miles west of the Loop. For that footprint it carries an extraordinary amount of protected fabric: the La Grange Village Historic District covers more than 1,000 buildings, and several homes here were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, including one of the bootleg houses he built outside his employment agreement. The village also sits on a genuine ridge. Bluff Avenue traces the prehistoric shoreline of Lake Chicago from roughly 14,000 years ago. Two Metra BNSF stations, La Grange Road and Stone Avenue, put Union Station about 23 minutes away on an express, and the village Pet Parade has run every year since 1947.

We measure and cut every run to the individual gable, dormer and porch face, and hang from gutter lines and shingle edges with removable clips so no fastener touches original trim. With more than a thousand buildings in the historic district, most La Grange rooflines are one of a kind, and permanent track is fastened to the house. On contributing buildings with original trim we will often recommend seasonal clips instead. On newer homes and simpler rooflines the track fits under the eave, all but disappears by day, and runs warm white or color from your phone. Old trim, and the fastener rule
On a house inside the village historic district the trim is frequently original: bargeboard, dentil courses, porch millwork and cut brackets that have been in place well over a century and repainted many times. Nothing we install is screwed, nailed or stapled into any of it. We hang from the gutter line and the shingle edge, size clips to the specific profile rather than forcing a universal clip, and work the shingle edge where a porch roof has no gutter at all. The same discipline applies at takedown, which is when most damage to old trim actually happens.
What a La Grange install costs
Seasonal lighting for an average house starts at $799 and up, depending on the complexity, height and access of the job. The historic district is where the range opens up. A Victorian or Queen Anne with two or three gable faces, a wraparound porch and dormers can carry close to twice the linear footage of a postwar house of the same square footage, because the ornament is the point of the house. Homes west of La Grange Road and toward Ogden Avenue tend to sit nearer the starting number. We quote the whole job after we walk the roofline, never off a rate card or a square footage table.
