The Unique Charm of Bucktown
Bucktown runs from Fullerton Avenue south to Bloomingdale and North Avenue, and from Western Avenue east to the Kennedy. The name is a translation: Polish residents called it Kozie Prery, Goat Prairie, for the goats kept here through the 19th century. Polish settlement began in the 1830s, Germans arrived from 1848 and established Holstein in 1854, and the neighborhood filled in quickly once the Logan Square elevated branch was finished. Three Polish cathedral style churches still set the skyline: St. Hedwig's, St. Mary of the Angels and the former Cathedral of All Saints. Horween Leather has been on North Elston since 1920. Damen Avenue carries the shopping district north from North Avenue to Webster, and the Bloomingdale Trail, the 606, runs the southern edge.

We stage from the alley, work the front elevation early rather than during evening foot traffic on Damen, and plan the cord route down a gangway or off a rear porch circuit instead of across a public walk. Where the 606 embankment backs a property, access has to come from the street side by necessity.
