The Unique Charm of Elgin
James and Hezekiah Gifford founded Elgin in April 1835 and it incorporated as a city on 24 April 1854. With about 114,797 residents it is the sixth most populous city in Illinois, spread across 38.60 square miles some 35 miles northwest of Chicago, on both banks of the Fox River. For most of a century it was a watchmaking town: the Elgin National Watch Company ran the largest watchmaking complex in the world until production stopped in 1965 and the factory came down in 1966, though the clocks at Union Station still carry the Elgin name. Two National Register historic districts hold the cobblestone and Queen Anne housing, along with Sears catalog homes built between 1908 and 1940. Three Metra stations serve the city on the Milwaukee District West line: National Street, Elgin, and Big Timber Road at the western end.
