The Unique Charm of Wicker Park
In 1870 alderman Charles Wicker and his brother Joel bought 80 acres along Milwaukee Avenue, subdivided it, and set aside four acres as the park the neighborhood is named for. The Great Chicago Fire the following year filled it quickly with people who needed somewhere to live. The wealth arrived with them: Hoyne and Pierce near North and Damen became known as Beer Baron Row, where Chicago's brewers built mansions in Italianate, Queen Anne and Romanesque styles, and the Wicker Park Historic District joined the National Register on 20 June 1979. The Division, Milwaukee and Ashland junction is the Polish Triangle. Three Blue Line stations serve the neighborhood, Damen, Division and Chicago, and the 606 runs the northern edge.

Mansions built to be looked at, by people who could afford to prove it
Beer Baron Row exists because a generation of brewers competed with each other in masonry, which is a useful thing to understand before lighting one of those houses. The ornament is asymmetric on purpose: a turret on one side, a projecting bay on the other, hoods over some windows and not others. A symmetrical lighting plan fights all of that and makes the house look unbalanced rather than making the lighting look neat. We follow the massing the architect chose, which usually means the two halves of the front carry deliberately different amounts of light.
What a Wicker Park install costs
Seasonal lighting for an average house starts at $799 and up, depending on the complexity, height and access of the job. A flat or a modest frame house near the park often sits close to it. A Beer Baron Row mansion is a different order of work: three stories of masonry, a turret, multiple projecting bays and a cornice well past ladder reach, all on one elevation. Corner lots put two full elevations in public view. We quote the whole job after we walk the roofline, never off a rate card or a square footage table.
